Lanier became fascinated by the commanding forms and fascinating textures of the historic ships on the Delaware River. These historic ships exhibit an unwillingness to relinquish a past of grand achievements and voyages. As a member of the Philadelphia Ship Preservation Guild, she volunteers to help restore the 1901 Portuguese tall ship in Gazela, the inspiration for over twenty of her paintings. For Lanier, boats represent possibility, as they facilitate ways of moving that are otherwise impossible. Join us to discover how paintings about boats, are not always about boats!
